About Raw Beats Festival

The well-established Ultrasound Festival at Tmuna Theater has chosen to focus on club music this year.

To disconnect this music from its natural context; “the club”, and to look at it in another context. The transfer of electronic music from the club to Tmuna Theater, aims to re-examine our own cultural perception of this type of music. The banner statement being that club music is an artistic and cultural musical phenomena which must be acknowledged (or listened to) as a musical art form in itself.

The festival will be ongoing for 2 nights, during which time It will combine performances by leading musicians and DJ’s (emerging and established) both from Israel and the world. The party will be organized around a broad lineup of electronic music, which will present a sweeping retrospective of club music from the world (historically and culturally).

At the same time as we will host the party, which will take place in the large space in Tmuna Theater and which has room for up to 400 people, we will also open second room which will turn into a kind of negative of the party. These space will present a deconstruction of the club scene and it’s night life and challenge the natural context of club music; “the club”. The festival will invite DJ’s, musicians and artists from different disciplines to research the questions; “What are the different components of night life?” and “How can one separate these components from the music or the music from them?”, “How is the experience of partying shaped in our culture?”, “Will the separation of music from its context alter the experience of listening to it and create a different kind of listening, compared to what we hear in clubs?”, “Will separating the music from it’s context and isolating the elements common to most parties, influence the way we receive the music?”, “Will this change the experience of the party?”, “Is night life a combination of the political and the economic?”, “Can we, as club music audiences, have an aesthetic experience? A Physical one? An Emotional one?”, “Are we responsible for our fate and how does the drug culture connect to these experiences?”, “Do we leave our day to day experiences behind in favor of a new set of rules when we enter a club thereby becoming freer, or does the club simply provide us with a new set of rules which policing us at night, different only because it isn’t day?

Both parts of the festival (the ongoing party and the exhibition) will present a wealth of observations and engagement particularly interesting for an audience that doesn’t frequent the club scene and isn’t familiar with the ” club experience”, while for the seasoned club audiences, the festival will afford the opportunity to experience the club in another context with a critical distance and will attempt to position this music as a pure artistic form.
